Install

The Chrome Web Store listing is being prepared. Until then you can build Cuebird from source and load it in developer mode.

Chrome Web Store

The install link goes here once review is done. After installing, a page opens where you choose the language you’re learning and your own.

For Chrome on desktop. Chrome on mobile doesn’t support extensions.

Install a tester build from a zip

If you’re trying Cuebird early, we’ll send you the built extension as a zip file.

  1. Unzip it and keep the folder somewhere permanent. Deleting the folder removes the extension.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode at the top right.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder (the one with manifest.json in it).
  4. When you get a new version, replace the folder and press the reload button on the extension’s card.

Build and load it yourself

For development, or if you want to try it early. Requires Node 24.

  1. Get the repository and build the extension. Set the translation and dictionary server with WXT_SERVER_URL; if you leave it out, http://localhost:8787 is used.
    cd extension
    npm ci
    WXT_SERVER_URL=https://your-server npm run build
  2. To use a local server, start it in another terminal.
    cd server
    npm ci
    cp .env.example .env
    npm start
  3. Open chrome://extensions and turn on Developer mode at the top right.
  4. Click Load unpacked and choose the extension/.output/chrome-mv3 folder.
  5. Open a YouTube video with subtitles. Cuebird’s subtitles and control bar appear over the player.

Firefox

Build with npm run build -- -b firefox, then go to about:debugging → This Firefox → Load Temporary Add-on and pick .output/firefox-mv2/manifest.json. Temporary add-ons are removed when Firefox restarts.
